THE BEACHES

La Caletta white fine sand beach is extended for 4 km from the small pier at the back of the port until Santa Lucia village. Just outside the village, at the end of the beach side houses in corrispondence of Siniscola river mouth, with its coastal pond, there is a wonderful pine forest without continuity solution till S’ena e Sa Chitta village. The beach is quite crowdy during July and August but it is sufficient to go away from the village to find a relaxing oasis and crystalline water. This is a paradise corner for sailing, wind surf and kite surf lovers. In the neighbourhood there are some of the best baeches of the east coast, such as Capo Comino, Berchida, Bidderosa and Cala Liberotto southward beaches and San Giovanni, Posada, Orvile, Matta e Peru, Otttiolu, Budoni and S. Teodoro beaches northward to Olbia

Capo Comino (8 km from La Caletta)

It’s a fine white sand beach surrounded by pink rocks and it’ s characterized by high sandy dunes with low juniper bushses. The colour of the water varies from torquise to blue cobalt. At the back of the beach there is a pond with herons and pink flamingos. From the old lighthouse at 160 m to the sea level it’s possible to have an extraordinary sight of the coast from Tavolara to Orosei gulf.

Berchida (12 km from La Caletta)

On the 125 state road which connects La Caletta with Orosei, at the gatehouse you turn left on dirt road and after the ruins of the Conca Umosa nuragic settlement and Rempellos Phoenician village you reach the wonderful, wild and lonely (except in August) Berchida beach. It’s long several km and 50 m wide; it’ s suggested by Legambiente as one of the five best beaches in the Mediterranean sea. On the back beach many wild scented lilies are the frame of a vegetation of junipers and “montes de mare” pines.

Bidderosa (15 from da La Caletta)

It’s a 860 hectares protected area which embraces 5 beaches, 2 ponds and a wonderful hinterland of junipers, cork oaks and olm oaks; the admission is restricted and with fee. After the well indicated entrance, in correspondence of the forest guard house, there is a dirt road, not easy for cars, which crosses at the beginning a bushy pine forest and later marvellous eucalyptus trees, junipers and other essences. Further there is sa Curcurica pond, a damp area with an important botanical interest. The first beach, at the border with Cala Liberotto, is 4 km after the entrance; the following four beaches are 1 km far from each other. The last one borders on Berchida beach. Each creek is made by fine grey sand and it’s surrounded by granitic rocks. The length of the beaches is different but no more than 350 m and 15 m wide. At the back of the beaches junipers are dominant and in some areas there are pines.

Cala Liberotto (18 km from La Caletta)

The biggest beach is 500 m long and it’ s divided in diffent creeks. The sand is grey colured and middle-grained; the sandy bottom becames rocky southward. The sea is green and blue and it’ s shallow for the first 30 m. On both sides of the beach there are big granitic rocks pink-coloured; at the back there is a pond with a bed of reeds.

Orvile (5 km from La Caletta)

At the mouth of Posada river, surrounded by a wide luxuriant pine forest, there is a silvery, middle-grained beach. The green-blue sea has a sandy bottom which becomes deep very soon. It’ s particulary interesting during northwest windy days when colours change according to the strenght of the wind.

San Teodoro (30 Km from La Caletta)

For confusion lovers S. Teodoro Cinta beach certainly deserves a visit. The fine sandy beach is extended for several km and there is a wonderful landscape of Tavolara island. At the back of the beach there is S. Teodoro pond, a damp area with a high faunustic interest.
